How To Tell If Your Dog Is Happy

For humans, it’s easy to vocalize when we aren’t in the best mood, or something is bothering us.  Dogs don’t have the ability to speak in words, however their behavior or physical demeanor can tell it all.  Here are some signs to tell if your dog is happy.

Proximity.
A happy dog will want to be near you and often will lean into you. They love getting your attention and will often seek it out, leaning into your hand as you pet them.

The tail says it all.
When a dog’s tail is high and on the move, it usually means that they are pretty content with life. A tail in between a dog’s legs or low and slow moving can indicate that they are sad or stressed.

Ears at different masts.
A dog’s ears are very expressive.  Floppy and relaxed ears are a sign that your dog is feeling happy.

Relaxed state.
Posture can say it all sometimes.  When a dog seems relaxed and is not tense or stiff, they are usually feeling pretty good with their surroundings.  When petting a happy dog, their skin will move underneath your hand.

It’s all in the eyes.
Soft eyes without a fixed gaze can indicate that your dog is feeling content with life.  Happy dogs usually blink more as well.

Appetite.
Dogs tend to love mealtimes.  If a dog seems to have less of an appetite, it can indicate that your dog is unhappy (if not sick).

Belly up.
A dog exposing their belly to you, also known as roaching, is a good indicator that they are feeling connect and comfortable.
