Bulldogs!

April 21st is “Bulldogs are Beautiful” day.  The thing I like most about this holiday is the message behind it.  We all know that Bulldogs can look tough with their sturdy physique and wrinkly faces, but lovers of the breed know that there is much more to them than their appearance.  This stresses the fact that we should celebrate the differences that make us, and all creatures look unique, and celebrate those differences.

Let’s take a deeper look at the breed and find out 5 fun facts that go deeper than their appearance.

  1. Bulldogs are usually delivered via c-section. It is necessary because those bulldog puppy heads are too big to fit through the birthing canal. Those poor momma bulldogs!
  2. Bulldogs are big on the snorting, snoring and stinking (gas!). This is because they are brachycephalic, a condition caused by their short snouts.
  3. In 2015, a 4 year old Bulldog named Otto was entered into the Guiness Book of World Records for “setting a record for the longest human tunnel travelled through by a skateboarding dog, gliding through the legs of 30 people”.
  4. The Bulldog is a very popular breed to have as a mascot. Many sports clubs and American Universities (39 to be exact) have taken the breed on as their mascot.
  5. Bulldogs have been a part of history, too! In 1903, a Bulldog named Bud was a passenger on what was thought to be America’s first ever road trip.  He was equipped with driving goggles as he explored 150 miles of paved roads when cars were rare and there were not many paved roads at the time.
