It’s a good idea for any pet owner to go through a Canine First Aid Course. There is a variety of information presented which prepares you for the worst case scenario with your pet.
Here are the main components of a homemade Canine First Aid Kit.
Information cards with:
1. your veterinary and emergency veterinary clinic’s contact information
2. your dog’s resting and active vitals
- Latex gloves – for a sterile environment
- Muzzle or something that can act as one (shoelace, string, etc.)
- Bandages – gauze, sterile pads, cotton balls
- Tape/vet wrap – to keep a bandage in place
- Saline solution – for washing out eyes
- Syringe – to flush wounds/give fluids by mouth
- Needle-nose pliers
- Tweezers, scissors, and clippers – to remove foreign objects or fur from a wound
- Blanket/towel and washcloth – used for transporting a dog or keeping warm/cool
- Thermometer and lubricating jelly
- Hot/cool packs
- Antibiotic ointment – for minor skin wounds
- Pet-safe medication – Benadryl, Aspirin, Pepto-Bismol
