Like humans, dogs need a well-balanced and nutritious diet. This helps our furry friends to have the energy they need throughout the day and to remain healthy. The problem with some of today’s dog food is it can be extremely processed with large amounts of preservatives added. Providing a fresh and balanced diet for your pup helps them fight disease and live a healthy and long life.
Here are the main ingredients to look for when feeding your dog:
Meat and Organs
Meats like beef, lamb, chicken and turkey are most commonly used in dog food. Organs like the heart, liver and kidneys are very dense in nutrients and can be a good source of protein. Meat is the most digestible and contains the highest amino acid amounts that your pup needs. Amino acids help your dog to build and repair body tissue, carry oxygen throughout the body, support muscles, skin, and coat, and boost their immune system.
Carbs
Healthy carbohydrates contain nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and fiber that your dog can use to help their GI tract. Examples of healthy carbs include blueberries, pumpkin, squash, leafy greens and apples.
Healthy Fats
Healthy fats help your dog feel “full” after a meal. They can support healthy coats/skin and help with chronic inflammation. Foods that your dog can get healthy fats from are: coconut/sunflower oil, flaxseeds, fish oils and egg yolks.
Calcium
Dogs, especially puppies, need this “bone-building” supplement (just like us!). You can find calcium in egg shells, bones and fish. In dog food, it can be listed as “bone meal”.
Superfoods
There are some foods that have their own superpowers. These “superfoods” are rich in antioxidants, fiber and fatty acids. Some superfoods that your dog can enjoy are kale, carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, fish, yogurt and blueberries.
