A cat purring is such a unique and distinct sound. If you’ve ever wondered how a cat purrs, the sound comes from rapid movements in their voice box. It begins as a signal in the central nervous system then moves to the muscles in the voice box. The sound and feeling of a purr can bring you such a calming and happy feeling that it’s hard to imagine it meaning anything other than happiness.
Why do cats purr? There are 2 main categories that we can place a purr.
Cats use purring as a way of communicating with you. They may be telling you that they’re happy when they see you, or a good cuddle is making them feel safe and loved. Also check the clock – they may be telling you that they’re hungry and it’s dinner time! Kittens can purr after only a few days after birth. Since they are still blind and deaf when they are this young, research show it might be a way to create a mother-kitten bond a communicate with her that they are okay.
This might not be well known, but cats can use purring as a means of healing. The vibrations from their purring can cause things like: healing bones and wounds, relax breathing, decrease pain/swelling and build/repair muscles and tendons. In short, purring can physically rejuvenate cat. If only we could purr!
