It’s “Cat Lover’s Month”! Cats bring so much joy to our lives and provide benefits that we probably don’t even think about it. From social support, companionship, better sleep and fewer allergies, cats really do impact our lives in a positive way.
If you’re looking to welcome a new cat into your home, there are a few things to consider:
- Check your space
Are you currently able to provide a proper home life to a cat? If you have kids and other pets, is it a suitable atmosphere for a cat? Can you provide a quiet room for a cat if they are feeling the need for space? - Access to a veterinarian
Ensure that there is a veterinarian who you trust to care for your pet. - Commitment
Cats are a big responsibility. Make sure that you have the funds to provide food, toys and veterinary care for your cat. Having a cat sitter lined up to care for your cat anytime you are away is a good idea too. - Assess the cat’s health and behaviour
Before adopting, it’s good to get to know the cat so you know what to be prepared for. Find out if the cat has any health issues that you will need to help them with. Determine what kind of personality they have so you know how to act with them.
