Are you think of adopting a cat? Well, there’s no better time than the present since June is “Adopt a Cat Month”! Adopting any animal is a process; a process where you have to be patient while getting to know one another. With cats, there is a general rule to follow called the 3-3-3. While all cats and their comfort levels are different, the 3-3-3 rule is merely a guide to help you and your cat acclimatize to a new home and each other.
3 Days
For the first 3 days, your cat may feel overwhelmed and nervous in a new home. You may not see them much as they may hide, refuse to eat and to even use the litterbox.
WHAT TO DO: Ensure the environment is calm, quiet and safe. Provide their basic needs like food, water and a place to sleep but don’t pressure them. Let your new cat come to you – allow them to take all the time they need to feel comfortable.
3 Weeks
After 3 weeks, your cat might be showing signs of settling in and even feeling comfortable enough to open up. You may see glimmers of their personality come through and your kitty might be up for some play time.
WHAT TO DO: Provide a consistent routine with feeding times, play times, and cuddle times (if they are open to it).
3 Months
After 3 months, your cat should be feeling comfortable and confident in their home. A bond has now been formed between the two of you, and they will feel secure in their relationship.
WHAT TO DO: Simple – continue to care, love and support your cat. Enjoy their furry presence and love.
