With Christmas approaching, Santa is probably busy getting new toys and treats ready to fill your pet’s stocking. Fittingly, December is ‘Safe Toys and Gift Month’ – it’s a perfect time to ensure that all current and future toys are safe for your pet.
What makes a safe toy? Here are a few tips!
Consider the Size and Breed of your Pet
Pick toys that are appropriate for your dog. Avoid small toys that are easily chewed/swallowed with your larger breed as this could become a choking hazard. Some breeds may have a stronger jaw/bite force, so select a more durable toy.
Avoid Toys With Small Parts
Toys that have plastic eyes, buttons, beads or other embellishments should be avoided.
Supervise Rawhide
Rawhides can be a delicious treat and distraction for dogs, however these can be broken into smaller pieces that can become a choking hazard or damage intestines. Stay aware while your dog is enjoying their treat.
Check Labels
Depending on where the toy is manufactured, some toys can contain materials that can be harmful for dogs. Materials with heavy metals and latex can cause risks of cancer and neurological disorders in dogs. Know and understand what your dog is chewing.
Routinely Check Toys
Make it a habit to routinely check the toys your dog plays with. You may find toys that have been chewed to reveal the stuffing inside, or tiny pieces are coming off them. You don’t want your dog to ingest these things, so best to purge these toys and move on to something new.
