October 1st is “National Walk Your Dog Day!”
There are so many benefits of walking your dog. Here are just a few!
–Strengthens your bond. When a dog looks up at you on a walk with a look of happiness on his/her face, is there anything better? The connection that is formed while out walking is the foundation of your relationship. You are out being active and doing something together that they will always be excited and happy to do with you.
-Socialization. Both you and your pup can meet new people and make new friends. Meeting neighbours helps you build a sense of community and can make you feel like you belong.
-Makes a healthier and happier YOU both mentally and physically.
1. Mentally: Studies show that being around a dog can lower levels of cortisone, a stress hormone. Dogs support people with so many different needs, so combine a dog with walking and your mental state is sure to improve! Not only will it help your mental health but your dog’s as well too. New smells stimulate your dog’s brain and keep their minds active.
2. Physically: Walking can lower blood pressure, help you lose weight and improve your overall health. Not only should you be focused on your physical health, but your pet’s too! Walking improves your dog’s digestive system and helps keep them regular. Another day to observe in October is National Pet Obesity Day on October 11th. This can most certainly be a problem with some dogs, so be sure to get your pup checked by the vet, provide them with a healthy diet and get out and walk with them!
Walking your dog will help you and your pup’s lives in so many ways, so there really is no excuse to get out and walk. Get out there and get moving to help your furry companion have the happy, healthy and long life that they deserve.
