Cats can help us in many areas of our lives.  They offer us social support in difficult times, improve our health by lowering stress levels, provide companionship when we need it, and can help us get better quality sleep.  Since cats offer us so much, we thought that on “Respect Your Cat Day” specifically we could go over a few simple ways on how to show our feline friends the respect they very much deserve.

Understand your cat’s body language.

  • Eyes

If their pupils are normal, they’re calm and in a “relaxed” state. If their pupils are dilated and/or have narrowed, this indicates their adrenaline has kicked in and they’re ready to play!

  • Tail

Tails swaying and flicking in a “C” position indicates your cat is relaxed. An upright tail also indicates a happy kitty! However, if your cat’s tail is wagging low or is in a “hook-like” position, they’re ready to play (or prey!). Finally, a tail with their fur standing on its end is a warning sign – either they’re mad or frightened.

  • Ears

A cat’s ears can sometimes look like a satellite antenna, but they can also communicate non-verbally how your cat is feeling! If your cat’s ears are forward, this means they are alert and/or happy. If they have what we call “airplane ears” and are either flat or to the side, this means they are irritated or frightened. If your cat’s ears are simply moving around frequently, this is just your cat’s way to be attentive and follow the sounds they are hearing!

Clean the Litterbox

Cats are more likely to use their litterbox when it’s clean.  Clean it daily and find one your cat likes.  Some prefer a dome style, while others are content to be more out in the open.

Food and Drink

Feed your cat at consistent times when you can. Don’t overfeed so they maintain a healthy weight. Also provide clean water daily, and don’t forget to wash the water dish too! This is a common place in a home for bacteria to be found because people don’t wash it on a consistent basis.

Cats enjoy love and affection on their own terms.  If you respect your cat, they will allow you the privilege of showing you love as well.
