It’s Pet First Aid Awareness Month! We love our furry friends so much that we should ALWAYS be prepared for an emergency. Taking extra precautions while hiking, camping, or going somewhere where access to a veterinarian isn’t easy are a must!
What can you do to be prepared for an emergency? You can create your very own Pet First Aid Kit and take it along for every adventure!
Your Pet First Aid Kit should include:
- Latex gloves – for a sterile environment
- Muzzle or something that can act as one (shoelace, string, etc.)
- Bandages – gauze, sterile pads, cotton balls
- Tape/vet wrap – to keep a bandage in place
- Saline solution – for washing out eyes
- Syringe – to flush wounds/give fluids by mouth
- Needle-nose pliers
- Tweezers, scissors, and clippers – to remove foreign objects or fur from a wound
- Blanket/towel and washcloth – used for transporting a dog or keeping warm/cool
- Thermometer and lubricating jelly
- Hot/cool packs
- Antibiotic ointment – for minor skin wounds
- Pet-safe medication – Benadryl, Aspirin, Pepto-Bismol
Go the extra mile and take a Pet First Aid course to ensure you feel confident to help your pooch in a crisis. Always remember to check your first aid kit every few months to restock on any items you may need and to make sure that nothing has expired.
