Dog Slobber Challenge

November 16th is National Slobber Appreciation Day!  It was created in 2012 to help bring awareness to the Newfoundland breed who are known for their slobbering abilities.  The Dog Slobber Challenge is an internet sensation where people share pictures of their drooly pets.  The challenge was created to provide some comic relief to our ever-drooly furry pooches.  Social Media is at its finest when there are pictures of a dog mid-drool, a slobber shower shaking things up, or some drool earrings (see below for a better description).  For something that can be so gross, it can provide much needed humour to an otherwise sticky situation.

Dog owners have been so creative that they have identified some different types of slobber. Sound gross? That’s because it is!

May I introduce you to some types of slobber:
Flooger (pinch and flick)
Shoelaces (strings on each side)
Double-shoestrings (2 strings on each side)
Slimed (the name says it all)
Earrings (from mouth to ear)

As gross as drooling can be, there is a purpose to its stickiness.
Drooling is a reflex, not a behaviour. This means that a dog can’t help it, so there’s no point getting angry when you get some dog slobber on your pants or step in a puddle beside you while you’re preparing a tasty dish.
A dog can drool in attempt to cool themselves down.  When a dog is very hot and there is excessive drooling, warning bells should start going off.  This can be a sign of heat stroke so best to take precautions in this situation.

Here are the top dog breeds who fill our slobber bucket:
Newfoundland
Saint Bernard
Dogue de Bordeaux
Bloodhound
Bulldog
Neapolitan Mastiff
Bernese Mountain Dog
