Flatulence can be normal, and for those of us on the more immature side, even funny.  However, excessive farting or even smellier than normal gas can be indicators of something other than a normal bodily function.  Since April 8th is National Dog Farting Awareness Day, here are some things to think about the next time your dog passes gas.

Excessive farting can be indicators of:
-Eating too fast (air is swallowed).
-A Brachycephalic breed (dogs with snub noses like Bulldogs and Boston Terriers). These breeds are more prone to pass gas because of this physical feature which causes them to swallow more air.
-Lack of exercise or a sedentary lifestyle.
-Food allergies or sensitivities. Certain foods like dairy, beans, soy, peas, table scraps and certain vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower can be hard to digest, which can increase gas.
-Sudden change in diet.

Increased or smelly gas can be indicators of simple problems; however, it can also point to gastrointestinal dysbiosis, stress, infection, parasites, and more.  If your dog has a sudden change/increase in flatulence, best to get them checked by your vet.
