Having our little furry sidekick join us for adventures or travels is a dream that we all want to come true. However, what do you do if the travelling part of the adventure causes your dog to not feel so hot?
Motion sickness occurs due to a sense of balance in the inner ear being disrupted. When this inner balance is off, the sensory organ in the inner ear can send signals to the nausea center of the brain, thus causing your pooch to feel sick.
Symptoms of car sickness can include:
-whining/moaning
-yawning
-drooling
-panting
-lip licking
-shaking
-vomiting
A little fun, or not so fun, fact about car sickness is that puppies tend to be more susceptible because their inner ears haven’t fully developed. So, what can we do to help these pups with car sickness troubles? Below are some ideas:
-Fast for roughly 8-12 hours before travel. Ensure your pet is hydrated.
-Limit field of vision. Try to block the side window views – a side covered crate can help with this.
-Keep it cool. Open windows or keep the temperature low.
-Maintain a calm environment. Keep it quiet or have calming music playing. Bring a familiar blanket or stuffy.
-Ginger can help relieve symptoms of nausea.
-Veterinarian prescribed anti-nausea medications can help car sickness. Such medications are safe but may cause extra salivation.
