It’s “Adopt a Shelter Cat Month”! Did you know that the reason this holiday takes place in June is because June is the month of the year when most kittens are born?  Adopting a shelter animal has its perks, and we are here to give you 5 reasons why you should adopt a shelter cat!

Their personality is known.
Cats in shelters interact with the caretakers and volunteers. These individuals really get to know the cat’s personality and can help pair you with the type of temperament that goes best with your household.

It bumps up your heart health.
Research has shown that people who have cats are less likely to suffer from heart attacks, cardiovascular diseases and strokes.  Owning a cat lowers blood pressure, thus ensuring a healthier you!

Goodbye, Asthma!
Research has found that cats can improve a young child’s resistance to asthma and reduce a chance of developing other allergic diseases!

Mental health is a strength.
Living with a cat can help lower blood pressure and positively effect a person’s ability to cope with stress, anxiety, depression and loneliness.  In general, we are happier with pets in our home!

Fewer health problems.
This fact alone must be a motivator to adopt a rescue cat.  Mixed breed cats are more likely to have less health problems than purebreds.

Adopting is an amazing thing to do but remember to consider all factors before doing so.  Things to remember are:
-Ensure everyone in your household is ready to adopt a cat (and any kids understand how to treat a cat)
-Confirm there are no allergies in the household
-Make sure you can financially support a cat for their monthly needs and any unforeseen circumstances (vet bills aren’t cheap!)
-Commit to the lifestyle change, like cleaning litterboxes, vacuuming endless cat hair, playing with them and working on developing a bond.
