We already know that pets can add so much to our lives.  They can act as little therapists on furry legs.  There are so many reasons why pets are good for our health, but let’s pick 4 to explore!

  1. Fewer Allergies
Studies have shown that being exposed to pets during the first year of life can reduce the risk of developing allergies.  Not only are you less likely to develop pet allergies, but other allergies like dust mites, ragweed and grass.
  2. Social Support
Pets can serve as a source of social support during difficult times. They encourage communication/social interaction, thus avoiding loneliness and isolation. Petting an animal can release certain chemicals in the brain needed to “feel better”, so their support is much needed.
  3. Better Sleep
A good sleep is the foundation for having a positive mind and a good day. Studies have show that sleeping with an animal can have several benefits.  The physical contact can reduce depression, it can promote a sense of security, and ease insomnia as they allow you to relax and fall asleep.  There are even studies that have found people, especially women, prefer sleeping with their cats than their partners.  Sleeping with a cat can provide comfort and improve the quality of your sleep.
  4. Improve Cardiovascular Health
Dog owners can have lower blood pressure due to the calming effect they can have and the exercise they get from their walks. This exercise also lowers cholesterol. Cats lower stress levels, which is key to a healthy heart (or just being healthier all around in general). They do not require as much work as a dog and provide more of a stress-free lifestyle.  Studies have shown that people who own cats are less likely to die from a heart attack.  Even after a heart attack, studies have shown that patients recover faster and live longer when they have a pet in their home.
